Pastor Trent was ordained and installed as the pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church in 2025. He is a graduate of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and holds additional degrees in information science and philosophy. He has a deep appreciation for the ancient theology and practices of the Christian faith, but this appreciation is balanced with a desire to make those ideas and practices relevant to the concerns and struggles of our modern world.
With an ecumenical background, Pastor Trent draws from a variety of Christian traditions and spiritual practices. One of his favorite things about being a pastor is journeying alongside people wherever they are in their spiritual journey and helping them find theological language and spiritual practices that are rooted in the example of Jesus while being uniquely life-giving, healing, and empowering for each person.
Outside of church life, he enjoys gardening, hiking, cooking, practicing yoga, and spending time with his husband, Anthony, and their two beagles, Hildegard and Beauregard.
He would love to get to know you—feel free to reach out or stop by to talk!

Rev. Franz Schemmel is the founding pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church. While serving as pastor of Hope Lutheran Church in Springtown during the 1990s, he helped establish a preaching point in Weatherford that would eventually become Messiah. He was called as the mission developer in 1999 and became the congregation’s first called pastor in 2003.
A graduate of Wartburg Theological Seminary, Pastor Franz retired in 2025 after 45 years of ordained ministry. Throughout his career, he has been a passionate advocate for justice and inclusion in both church and society. He played a key role in the Northern Texas–Northern Louisiana Synod’s Public Witness Team, supported the synod’s prison ministry efforts, and currently serves as Board President of Texas Impact, an interfaith advocacy organization.
In retirement, Pastor Franz and his wife, Ann Hafften, remain beloved and active members of our Messiah family.
