While we still journey through the 40 days of Lent, our eyes are always fixed on the hope of resurrection. As we near the celebration of Easter, begin marking your calendars for the many opportunities for prayer, renewal, and celebration during Holy Week and the Season of Easter:
Palm Sunday — March 29th @ 10:30 AM
Immerse yourself in the story of Jesus’ journey to the cross. We begin our service outside waving palm branches as we reenact Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Through dramatic readings, music, and prayers the rest of the service will be an interactive retelling of the Last Supper, the prayer in the garden, the trial before Pilate, and the crucifixion and burial.
Holy Thursday (Maundy Thursday) — April 2nd @ 7:00 PM
The evening before Good Friday, we remember the Last Supper — the passover meal at which Jesus gives us the command to continue celebrating the sacrament of communion and to love one another as he has loved us. Our service will be a contemplative celebration of Holy Communion and will include the stripping of the altar and a washing of hands (to recall how Jesus washed his disciples before the meal).
Good Friday — April 3rd
Good Friday is the solemn day we recall Jesus death for our salvation. At Messiah, we will observe another day of reflection. From 9am-3pm on Good Friday, the sanctuary will be open and available for private prayer or to take part in a self-guided prayer station. Pastor Trent will also be present for prayer, conversation, of the sacrament of confession and forgiveness.
At 7:00 PM we will have a Tenebrae Service, or a service of the “7 Words.” We will recount the final words of Jesus from the cross and quietly reflect on the awesome mystery of this holy day.
Easter Sunday — April 5th
Easter Sunday falls on April 5th this year. We will begin our celebration at 9:00 AM with an Easter Egg Hunt for the kids and a potluck Easter Brunch. During brunch, be sure to step into the sanctuary and adorn the cross with flowers! At 10:30 AM we will celebrate a festive Divine Service complete with all the excitement of ringing bells, splashing waters, colorful flowers, joyous music, and dazzling light.
