For more than a year we have been providing funding for a pig project in a partnership with St. Peter Lutheran Church and School in Sierra Leone. We are close to the day of this project bearing fruit for the church and community.
To celebrate this accomplishment we will have a Sierra Leone style Service of Thanksgiving on June 28 at 10:30 with Pastor Christopher Yanker and friends from the Sierra Leone community leading our worship. Also, Pastor Yanker has agreed to provide us all with a Sierra Leone style noon meal.
Lutherans all over the U.S. for many years have been making simple quilts used throughout the world in relief projects of Lutheran World Relief.
Most of the recipients of LWR quilts use them to protect themselves from cold and rain, but their versatility also makes them useful as simple tents or a wrap to hold/carry a child around them. Anyone interested in creating these quilts does NOT need to have proficient sewing machine skills. There are many steps from start to finish that do not require machine skills. An interest and planning session will be held on Saturday morning June 13 at 10:00 AM or contact Mary LeBeck if you are not able to attend.
Messiah has begun participating in a local expression of a nationwide initiative called “Churches Uniting in Christ”. The purpose of the initiative is to assist congregations to reach out to one another across denominational, racial, and ethnic lines for better understanding of one another and to better serve their communities.
As part of this work, we will be having a pulpit exchange on June 14. Pastor Stephen Schmidt of First United Methodist in Weatherford will be preaching at our 10:30 service, while Pastor Franz will be preaching at 11:00 at Prince Memorial CME church on Oak St.
Messiah has been invited to participate in the Healthy Kids Summer Lunch Program. We will need at least one driver and one or two helpers Monday – Friday June 8 through August 7. If you can help please contact Pastor Franz or Darrell Mohr (817-694-8307) as soon as possible.
Healthy Kids Summer Lunch Program is a collaboration between Weatherford ISD and the community of Weatherford The congregations currently involved include First United Methodist Church in Weatherford, North Side Baptist Church, First Baptist Church Horseshoe Bend, New River, and Grace First Presbyterian Church. Weatherford Parks & Recreation Department is also very supportive of the program. They are providing the use of their parks, signs for their locations, and other support.
The program is fully funded by a grant from the Texas Department of Agriculture. Hot meals will be prepared at Curtis Elementary every day, Monday – Friday. Volunteers from the community pick up those meals in coolers, deliver them to their site, and pass the meals out to each kid there. Any kid age 18 and under is eligible for a meal. There is no registration or income check. Every kid there can eat. The volunteers only take a tally of the number of meals fed
We have three young Christians who will be affirming their faith through the rite of confirmation on June 7 at the 8:00 a.m. service: Clara Fulsaas, Charlotte Lowes, and Harrison Lowes. Please hold them in your prayers.
A reception with cake and goodies will be held for the confirmands after the service.
